Music Quiz Night

On Saturday 25 November 2017, 39 people attended our Music Quiz Night.

On arrival teams found a table and set to work coming up with their team name.  Teams were – The 3 Amegoes, DA Kids, Ohana, Drop the Mic, Frazzelled, George and Sue & John.

The quiz comprised of 6 rounds of 15 songs, where a portion of the song was played and the teams had to name the artist, band, composer or song title.  They also had 3 sheets of bonus questions that had to be answered after rounds 2, 4 & 6.

Then to keep interest in the night while the sheets were marked games of heads and tails were played.

After months of preparation the night got under way.  Round 1 was The Warm Up where teams had to name the singer.  Robin played the first song “Living in the 70’s” and the teams had to name the band, which was “Skyhooks”.  Round 1 ended with “Nothing Else Matters” by “Metallica”

While the sheets were marked several games of Heads and Tails were played with questions like – Mozart was 5 when he composed his first piece – True or False, the answer is true.

At the conclusion of Round 1 Frazzelled was in the lead with 14 points, followed by George on 13, Ohana and DA Kids tied on 12, The 3 Amegoes on 11, Drop the Mic on 9 and Sue & John on 4.

Round 2 got under way with the teams having to name the movies that the songs were from while also answering their bonus question sheet.  Round 2 had songs like “As Time Goes By” from Casablanca, “Danger Zone” from Top Gun, “Up where We Belong” from An Officer and a Gentleman and “Moon River” from Breakfast at Tiffanys.  Teams had 2 sheets to hand in after this round so all teams could earn bonus points from the table questions.  Some questions on the sheets were – How many keys on a piano keyboard – answer 88, and what were the names of the 3 Gibb brothers in the Bee Gees – answer, Barry, Maurice & Robin.

Another game of Heads & Tails while the sheets were marked and with the additional of the bonus questions the leader board changed.

Leading now was The 3 Amegoes on 30 points followed by Frazzelled and Ohana on 28, George on 27, Drop the Mic on 23, DA Kids on 22 and Sue & John on 7.

Round 3 was One Hit Wonders & Write the Next Line of the Song.  Including songs like “My Sharona” by The Knack, “Video Killed The Radio Star” by The Buggles and 99 Leftballoons by Nena.

The 3 Amegoes and Ohana scored 11 in this round so there was still a 2 point buffer between the teams.

Round 4 was Boy Bands & Divas which included artists like – Shirley Bassey, The Easybeats, Bette Midler and The Monkees.  Teams also had to complete another Bonus Question Sheet.

Team George scored the best on this round with 13 out of 15 but fell down on the bonus questions only scoring 3.  Frazzelled scored well with 11 but only got 4 bonus points.  Ohana scored 10 and 5 bonus points while The 3 Amegoes scored 9 and did the best picking up 8 bonus points.  The 3 Amegoes now sat on 58, Ohana on 54, George on 52, Frazzelled on 49, Drop the Mic on 45, DA Kids on 31 and Sue & John on 9.

The teams seemed to stumble on the bonus questions which included things like Beyonce was a member of which group before going solo – answer Destinys Child, What is Taylor Swift’s middle name – answer Alison and What 1986 Aussie album sold 24 x platinum copies, is also the best selling album of all time in Australia selling 1,730,000 copies – answer – “Whispering Jack” by John Farnham.

Round 5 was titled “Aussies”, teams had to name the Singer or Band and the Song Title.  Songs included “Hopelessly Devoted to You” by Olivia Newton John, “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head” by John Farnham, “Firestarter” by Samantha Jade, “Howzat” by Sherbet, “My Happiness” by Powderfinger, “Crazy” by Icehouse and “Straight Lines” by Silverchair.

Frazzelled excelled with their Aussie bands scoring 20, Ohana scored 18, The 3 Amegoes 16, Drop the Mic 14, George 13, Sue & John 4 and DA Kids 2.

This closed the gap between The 3 Amegoes and Ohana back to 2 points.

Round 6 was “Extreme Challange”, this time no words were played only music, either the intro or a musical interlude in the song.  Songs included “Hotel California” by The Eagles, “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zepplin, “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple, “Waltz of the Flowers” by Tchaicovsky, “Bohemian Rapsody” by Queen and “Touch” by Noiseworks.

Teams also had a bonus question sheet to answer too, questions on this round included – How many reeds does on oboe have – answer 2, Who wrote the theme songs for “Unforgiven”, “A Perfect World”, “The Bridges of Madison County” and “Absolute Power” – answer Clint Eastwood, Which Beatle received the most fan mail – answer “Ringo Starr”, and What is the world’s most expensive musical instrument – answer a Stradivarius Violin which sold for $15.9 million.

How were the teams to finish, did Round 6 and bonus questions dramatically change the leaderboard.

Heads and Tails were once again played while the sheets were marked and points tallied.

At the conclusion of the night this is how the teams finished.

1st Place – The 3 Amegoes on 101 points

2nd Place – Ohana on 97 points

3rd Place – George on 93 points

4th Place – Frazzelled on 92 points

5th Place – Drop the Mic on 79 points

6th Place – DA Kids on 37 points

7th Place – Sue & John on 18 points

Team George scored the best on this round with 23 but only scored 5 bonus points, Ohana scored 21 but only picked up 4 bonus points, Frazzelled scored 20 and 3 bonus points, The 3 Amegoes scored 19 and 8 bonus points.  This is where The 3 Amegoes scored enough points to win the night.

Congratulations to “The 3 Amegoes” who were Helen & Terry Hardie and Graham Ede.

It was a great night, lots of fun, music that you may not have heard for some time and some you may wish to forget, but it had the compare and teams singing along throughout the night with something for everyone of all age groups.  Even if you didn’t know the songs it was a great night’s entertainment just being there and listening to the music.

I thank all those that come along and supported all the work that was put into the night as well as supporting the Club.
